Job Description

JOB TITLE: RELIGION Teacher
REPORTS TO:  v.p. Academics
DEPARTMENT:  sOCIAL STUDIES

EFFECTIVE DATE: February 1, 2025

POSITION SUMMARY:

The teacher is responsible for providing an educational atmosphere where students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical growth. The teacher is responsible for organizing and

implementing an instructional program that will result in students achieving academic success. This is a full-time, salaried position that includes teaching six to seven semester classes including Religion/religion related classes and/or other disciplines. The teacher shall agree to observe the employment and administrative policies of the SDA Church in Canada K-12 Board of Education, those policies of the SDA Church K-12 Board of Education which pertain to the operation of Kingsway College, the policies adopted by the Board of Directors of this school, and those laws and regulations of the Province of Ontario which are applicable to this school.

Major duties and responsibilities:

  • Provides a role model of successful Christian living for the students.

  • Interacts with students and models spiritual maturity in leading students towards Christ and then spiritual growth.

  • Implements instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.

  • Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.

  • Provides a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.

  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with students and parents on a regular basis. Meets, as needed, with parents to discuss student progress and problems.

  • Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and community.

  • Maintains effective and efficient record keeping procedures.

  • Assumes responsibility for meeting his/her course and school-wide student performance goals.

  • Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as: meeting deadlines and honouring schedules.

  • Prepares course outlines complete with specific requirements for the course, including more detailed expectations, assessment strategies, teaching strategies, and instructional materials.

  • Prepares a course summary complete with a schedule and evaluation methods which is given to students on the first day of class. Prepares unit outlines and daily lesson plans for the courses following Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum guideline requirements and applying NAD curriculum guidelines where possible.

  • Assigns lessons and corrects homework.

  • Administers tests to evaluate student progress, records results and issues reports to keep parents informed of progress.

  • Keeps attendance records and informs the Record’s office when students are missing from class.

  • Maintains discipline in the classroom.

  • Participates in faculty/staff meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops. Also participates in major school events (i.e. fund dinner, preview weekend, alumni weekend, graduation).

  • Accompanies students on field trips to expand classroom learning to the real world.

  • Provides adequate supervision of students for which he/she is responsible.

  • Other duties will include supervision duties on weekday evenings and weekends, sponsorship of a class, organization or club, and membership on various committees.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor.

Job standards and requirements:

Education:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (B.A or B.S.) with a Religion major or minor.

  • Should possess, qualify for, or be willing to take the necessary coursework to receive Ontario and NAD certification.

  • Must complete, or have completed, Encounter training to teach the Encounter Bible curriculum.

Experience:

  • Should have at least three years’ experience as a classroom teacher in the subject area(s) being taught.

Skills:

  • Effective teaching and learning skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team as well as independently.

  • Proficient in computer programs such as Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, etc.) and MS Office.

  • Understand the importance of confidential information concerning students and others while maintaining a high degree of integrity and support for Kingsway College.

Personal:

  • Dedicated and active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

  • Passionate about Adventist education and supports the mission of Kingsway College.

  • Professional, responsible, and a positive work attitude.

  • Available for weekend and evening hours when required.

  • Ability to pass criminal records and vulnerable sector checks.

  • Successful completion of the Adventist Learning Community online courses “Reclaiming Hope” and “Truth and Reconciliation”.
